Story:
No Stone Unturned offers integrated, collaborative therapy and learning for children with disabilities of all kinds with specialists all under one roof. They provide families hope and care when traditional therapies do not work or are not offered. With over 200 children on the waiting list, No Stone raised funds to grow and expand their reach with the new facility. This 18,000 s.f. facility includes training kitchens and restrooms, a physical therapy gym, group therapy space, private focused therapy rooms, clinical offices and much more.
AKA led a documentation process to understand what part of the built environment was causing the staff extra steps, hardship or lack of efficiency in their current workflow. It informed the team in creating designs and selecting products that are durable, cleanable, rollable for wheelchairs, and remove access to seams to limit the clientele’s destructive desire to pull materials apart. A few specialized rooms offer an even more resilient and durable wall coverings to protect from thrown objects and can be cleaned easily. To create healing environments, we leveraged color theory to select neutral colors for key spaces due to sensory overload issues.
AKA worked closely with the client on prioritizing budget items and developed a priority list to value engineer without compromising what design features and products offered high durability with low maintenance. An additional phase is planned to include an aquatic therapy pool and outdoor play/therapy space in the next phase of the capital campaign.
